Well folks, I must say I saw this coming, but hoped it wouldn’t happen. Apparently, Doug Pagitt, pastor of an emerging church in Minnesota called Solomon’s Porch, invited D. A. Carson to spend some time with him at his church. Figuring the title of his new book reflected his heart-intension, Doug invited Carson to experience first-hand what he was critiquing and criticizing. It seems as though Carson has or will reject the offer, and in general is completely uninterested in spending time with people in the Emerging Church movement. You can get the scoop here. This development is extremely unfortunate, but not surprising.

It is widely known Carson did not consult any of the emergent thinkers and practitioners about his book, nor did he attend any churches or conventions before writing or publishing. Oddly enough, he “quotes” from and refers to the Emergent Convention several times, a convention he didn’t even attend! In fact, several Emerging Churchers tried to set an appointment for dialogue before the book went to print, but Carson declined. For someone so interested in “becoming coversant with the emerging church,” yet so non conversant, I am finding it REALLY difficult to read his book objectively and take him and his criticism seriously…
