I write within the tension of spirituality and culture, politics and theology, existing and emerging forms of church, the Kingdom of God and Empire America, modern and postmodern thought, & the gritty drama that is my pilgrim story.

Never thought I'd see the day when a large group of Christians would promote a Jewish man for President!!

I was gonna put this in my recap post, but I'll just put something here quick.

First, I don't at all think they have a low view of the cross and what Jesus did for Humanity. They definitely affirmed Jesus' death and suffering and its application to Humanity's sin, so I dont think they had too low of the cross.

But the way they describe what happened on the cross was...odd. I wish I would have wrote what they said more, but in essence they talked about Jesus disrobing the Powers and making a spectacle of the Powers of the world, i.e. Rome. That's new to me! No I embrace a more Christus Victor understanding of atonement, rather than SIMPLY a Penal Substitutionary one, but even in that sense Jesus defeated Satan and his powers, not Human Imperial ones. Now I would grant a secondary narrative streaming through the passion narrative of Jesus over against even Human powers, but the point of the cross wasn't really Human Powers.

Which leads to my question: what happened at the cross? Unfortunately nothing was said about the objective issues of Sin and Death that was dealt with through His sacrifice, think Penal Sub. If Jesus was simply an example of non-violence, love, and subversion on the cross, Humanity is screwed; if His death was a disrobing of the Evil Human Systems of the world and subversion of Way of Empire, then again Humans are screwed. Unless something objectively happened on the cross with the objective realities of Sin and Death then we're in trouble.

Now I don't doubt they embrace an understanding of the sacrifice of Jesus to the Father, necessarily. My problem was that wasn't expressed and instead the Cross was made out to be a device to subvert Imperial Human Powers. And that seemed odd to me...

Any thoughts? Maybe I missed something...too bad you weren't there to help correct me :)

Jeremy,

Would you mind expanding on what you meant by;

"my question at this point is: what was the point of the cross in their eyes…was it to simply disarm the political/earthly powers? to disrobe the systemic powers of the world? hmmm so Jesus’ cross procession mirrors Roman Imperial processions? how about OT prophetic procession…just a thought"?

I think I might be able to explain it better but I would like to make sure I understand your question correctly first.

Does shane see any avenues for political influence? By contrasting the two empires (rome and God), is their any valid reason for attempting enter into the political arena? And given the models set up by Claiborne...would such an attempt amount to treason?

just some thought I had after reading the blog post.

Jeremy, thanks so much for this running synopsis of Shane's talk at Mars Hill. Sounds intriguing, and I've also heard the mild critique of reading too much "empire" into the NT texts. However, the USAmerican exegesis seems to see little to no empire in the text. Good stuff.
