I'm a big fan of it for obvious reasons. Two years ago I had a disquieting experience (generous characterization) with an editor at a Catholic publishing house who, when I proposed a Midrashic approach, said, "our readers want material that's anchored in scripture." Needless to say, we did not move forward with a book project! Love the "artistic Midrash" illustration. You visit (and have commented on) my friend John Frye's (jesustheradicalpastor.com) blog, so thanks for making your way over to mine :) And I agree with you Pistol: I wouldn't claim Midrash is more enlightening then modern hermeneutic tools, but I wonder if our thoroughly Western methods can do full justice to a thoroughly Eastern religious tradition and Text...I only offer Midrash (in it's basic form) as a possible pomo methodology and corrective to modern ways of interpreting the Text. You are right that discovering the Jewish roots of New Testament writings is instructive, but I wouldn't claim it is more enlightening than the wide variety of interpretive methods within our Christian heritage.
